Shannon Mills is an American supervising sound editor and sound designer based at Skywalker Sound. Born and raised in Indiana, he began his film sound career at Skywalker Sound as a sound librarian, where he worked with sound artists including Christopher Boyes, Gary Rydstrom, Richard Hymns, and George Watters. Mills spent eight years working closely with Rydstrom before moving into supervising sound editing and sound design, while continuing to work under the guidance of Boyes and Watters.
Mills' early credits include A Bug's Life (1998), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Titanic (1997), The Haunting (1999), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003) and Cars (2006), initially working primarily in sound effects editing and sound design. He subsequently became a supervising sound editor and sound designer on Iron Man (2008), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), The Lone Ranger (2013), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Inside Out (2015), Doctor Strange (2016) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
His work has included many Disney, Pixar, and Marvel productions. As supervising sound editor, he worked on Big Hero 6 (2014), The Good Dinosaur (2015), Inside Out (2015), Onward (2020), Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), Black Widow (2021), Encanto (2021), Strange World (2022), Wish (2023), Moana 2 (2024) and The Electric State (2025). His Marvel credits also include Captain America: Civil War (2016), Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok(2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), with Mills serving as one of the supervising sound editors on the latter two films.
Mills' work on Avengers: Endgame (2019) earned him a Golden Reel Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Dialogue and ADR for Feature Film, as well as a separate nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Sound Effects and Foley for Feature Film. He was also part of the sound team nominated for an HPA Award for Outstanding Sound – Feature Film for Avengers: Infinity War (2018).
For animation, Mills received particular recognition for his work on Inside Out (2015), which won the 2016 Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing – Sound Effects, Foley, Dialogue and ADR in an Animated Feature Film. He was also part of the sound team nominated for a 2016 Cinema Audio Society Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Animated.
Mills won the 2022 Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Animation for Raya and the Last Dragon (2021), sharing the award with the film's supervising dialogue editor, sound designers, sound-effects editors and Foley team. The following year, he was nominated in the same category for Encanto (2021).
His other award-winning credits include Big Hero 6 (2014), which received the Golden Reel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Animation, as well as earlier Golden Reel-winning productions Avatar (2009), Cars (2006), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and Titanic (1997).
Mills continued his work in both animation and live-action with Project Hail Mary (2026), as supervising sound editor and sound designer, and Avengers: Doomsday (2026), as supervising sound editor.
